It has been suggested that there is a greater need for a skilled stockperson in free range systems than there is in caged systems (Barnett, 1999). Ensuring that conditions such as feather-pecking are kept under control can require high levels of management <\/strong><strong> (Menke <em>et al<\/em>., 2004). Further, as with all farmed animals, a good understanding of the basic behavioral needs of the animals in our care is a prerequisite to achieving high standards of welfare.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>What Makes a Good Stockperson?<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmhealthonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/15651834134_0c83d160ea_k.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-11796\" src=\"https:\/\/www.farmhealthonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/15651834134_0c83d160ea_k-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"15651834134_0c83d160ea_k\" width=\"305\" height=\"203\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.farmhealthonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/15651834134_0c83d160ea_k-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.farmhealthonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/15651834134_0c83d160ea_k-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.farmhealthonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/15651834134_0c83d160ea_k.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 305px) 100vw, 305px\" \/><\/a>Hemsworth and Coleman (2010) identify the following attributes of the modern stockperson:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">A good knowledge of the animal\u2019s requirements, including nutritional, climatic, social and health<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Practical experience of animal care and maintenance<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The ability to identify deviations from normal behavior, health and performance and to provide or seek appropriate support when these occur<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The ability to take daily responsibility for the care and maintenance of large numbers of animals, and be able to so by working effectively either in a team or independently.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Daily Inspection<\/h4>\n<p>A daily inspection must be carried out to check that all birds are behaving normally and that all systems are operating properly.<br \/>\nObserve the flock closely for early signs of distress or disease and act on any signs of trouble or concern immediately.<br \/>\nIf this is not obvious, or remedial action is not effective, veterinary, technical or further advice should be sought as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<div class=\"description clearfix style-1 or 2\">\n<table style=\"height: 195px;\" width=\"802\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"308\">Important indications of poultry health include:<\/td>\n<td width=\"308\">Early signs of ill-health may include changes in:<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"308\">\n<ul>\n<li>Alertness<\/li>\n<li>Clear, bright eyes<\/li>\n<li>Good posture<\/li>\n<li>Vigorous movements if unduly disturbed<\/li>\n<li>Active feeding and drinking<\/li>\n<li>Clean, healthy skin, shanks and feet<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"308\">\n<ul>\n<li>Feed and water intake<\/li>\n<li>Preening<\/li>\n<li>Chatter<\/li>\n<li>Activity<\/li>\n<li>Egg production &#8211; ie reduced<\/li>\n<li>Egg quality &#8211; eg shell defects<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p>Injured, dead or individual sick birds should be removed promptly and disposed of according to guidelines and rules.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/poultry-welfare-guidance-on-the-farm\" target=\"_blank\">www.gov.uk\/guidance\/poultry-welfare-guidance-on-the-farm<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Dealing with Predators<\/h4>\n<p>Offering birds protection from predation can involve considerable management time, and can also be inconvenient if this involves shutting birds away in the evenings for protection. Placing feed outdoors at night can encourage wild birds and predators and also discourage a return to the housing at night. Feeding regimes can be adjusted to encourage birds to return to houses at night, and there are examples of single pop-holes being left open overnight but with bars at 10-12 cm apart to exclude foxes (Barnett, 1999).
