class=\"two_third\">\n<strong>Cryptosporidium species are protozoan parasites closely related to the coccidia. One major species, <em>Cryptosporidium parvum<\/em>, infects both farm animals and humans (<a href=\"#ref\">Ryan et al., 2014<\/a>), with another species, <em>Cryptosporidium andersoni<\/em>, currently restricted to adult cattle (<a href=\"#ref\">Smith et al., 2014<\/a>). The oocysts of <em>C. parvum<\/em> are so small that their association with acute\u00a0diarrhea\u00a0was never suspected until the 1970s, when specific biological\u00a0staining methods confirmed their presence in the\u00a0diarrhea.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"hr hr3\" style='margin:30px 0 10px 0 !important;'><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"one_third last\">\n<a class=\"button medium alternative-1\" title=\"Cryptosporidium in cattle\" href=\"#crypto\">Clinical Signs of Cryptosporidium<\/a><br \/>\n<a class=\"button medium alternative-1\" title=\"Control and Prevention\" href=\"#control_prevention\">Control and Prevention<\/a><br \/>\n<a class=\"button medium alternative-1\" title=\"What are the treatment options?\" href=\"#treatment\">Treatment Options<\/a><br \/>\n<a class=\"button medium alternative-1\" title=\"Good Practice Based on Current Knowledge\" href=\"#good_practice\">Good Practice<\/a>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div>\n<p>Cryptosporidiosis is widespread throughout the world. In Switzerland <em>Cryptosporidium<\/em> has been shown to be the most commonly detected (53.7%) of the four major enteropathogens (<a title=\"Rotavirus and Coronavirus\" href=\"https:\/\/www.farmhealthonline.com\/disease-management\/cattle-diseases\/rotavirus-and-coronavirus\/\">rotavirus<\/a>, <a title=\"Rotavirus and Coronavirus\" href=\"https:\/\/www.farmhealthonline.com\/disease-management\/cattle-diseases\/rotavirus-and-coronavirus\/\">bovine coronavirus<\/a>, <a title=\"Colibacillosis\" href=\"https:\/\/www.farmhealthonline.com\/disease-management\/cattle-diseases\/colibacillosis\/\">enterotoxigenic <em>Escherichia coli<\/em><\/a>) that cause neonatal diarrhea found in young diarrheic calves (<a href=\"#ref\">Uhde et al., 2008<\/a>). A study conducted in Cheshire, UK, reported a <span class=\"tooltips\"><a href=\"#\" rel=\"tooltip\" title=\"Proportion of a population to have a specific disease\">prevalence<\/a><\/span> of Cryptosporidium as 28% in unweaned calves (<a href=\"#ref\">Brook et al., 2008<\/a>). This is lower than a study of diarrheic calves in France where 43% of calves were also excreting cryptosporidia (<a href=\"#ref\">Lefay et al., 2000<\/a>). <em>C. parvum<\/em> has been found in both diarrheic and normal calves with the <span class=\"tooltips\"><a href=\"#\" rel=\"tooltip\" title=\"Proportion of a population to have a specific disease\">prevalence<\/a><\/span> ranging between 5% and 50% in calves aged between 7-84 days old across all seasons (<a href=\"#ref\">Bj\u00f6rkman et al., 2003<\/a>; <a href=\"#ref\">Castro-Hermida et al., 2002<\/a>; <a href=\"#ref\">Lefay et al., 2000<\/a>; <a href=\"#ref\">Trotz-Williams et al., 2005<\/a>). Shedding of <em>C. parvum<\/em> has been reported to peak in calves aged 1-3 weeks old, particularly at around 12 days old (<a href=\"#ref\">Huetink et al., 2001<\/a>; <a href=\"#ref\">Nydam et al., 2001<\/a>) with herd <span class=\"tooltips\"><a href=\"#\" rel=\"tooltip\" title=\"Proportion of a population to have a specific disease\">prevalence<\/a><\/span> peaking in the winter.<\/p>\n<h2>Cryptosporidium lifecycle<\/h2>\n<p><em>C. parvum<\/em> has a rapid, direct life cycle and infection occurs when viable oocysts in the environment are ingested by susceptible hosts, usually young stock under a month old.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The oocysts excyst (break open) in the gut releasing four infective parasites (sporozoites)<\/li>\n<li>The sporozoites penetrate the cells lining the small intestine and develop just below the cell membrane<\/li>\n<li>Here the parasites undergo at least two stages of asexual reproduction, then differentiate into sexual forms, which fuse to form oocysts<\/li>\n<li>The oocysts mature on the gut wall and are shed in the feces as fully developed, infective oocysts<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"description clearfix style-1\">This cycle is completed in 3-4 days. Ammonia from slurry will kill the oocysts when stored for a few days.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span>Oocysts can survive for many months under favorable conditions (cool and moist). Fresh farmyard manure (FYM)\u00a0and slurries can contain large numbers of oocysts, and when spread on land will pose an environmental contamination risk to both humans and animals. The heat generated during composting will kill the majority of oocysts, as will the ammonia generated by cattle slurry during storage (<a href=\"#ref\">Jenkins et al., 1998<\/a>). Exposure of oocysts to temperatures of &gt;55\u00baC for 15 days in windrow compost heaps appears to be effective in inactivation (<a href=\"#ref\">Van Herk et al., 2004<\/a>). However, the duration of time taken to kill off oocyts in compost is longer than that required to kill bacteria (<a href=\"#ref\">Hutchison et al., 2005<\/a>). The largest threat of environmental contamination comes from fresh feces washed down drains from farm yards and dairy parlors or deposited on pastures close to watercourses (<a href=\"#ref\">Wright and Coop, 1997<\/a>). The risk of disease entry to a farm from feed contaminated with oocysts from wildlife excreta should also be considered. Daniels and colleagues modelled the infectious probabilities from wild rodents and bird feces and determined that ingestion of feed contaminated with wildlife feces could account for the <span class=\"tooltips\"><a href=\"#\" rel=\"tooltip\" title=\"Proportion of a population to have a specific disease\">prevalence<\/a><\/span> of Cryptosporidium infection in sheep and cattle in Scotland (<a href=\"#ref\">Daniels et al., 2003<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"crypto\"><\/a>Animals show an age-related susceptibility to infection, so the older the animal at the time of infection, the less severe the clinical symptoms are likely to be (<a href=\"#ref\">Mosier et al., 1992<\/a>). Immunity is acquired so infections in adult animals are asymptomatic, and the numbers of oocysts shed are usually small (<a href=\"#ref\">Bukhari and Smith, 1996<\/a>; <a href=\"#ref\">Kaneta and Nakai, 1998<\/a>;<a href=\"#ref\"> Scott, 1995<\/a>; <a href=\"#ref\">Scott et al., 1994<\/a>). An infected dam can act as a reservoir of infection for her offspring, although there is variable evidence of a periparturient rise in oocyst shedding as some studies have shown no increase (<a href=\"#ref\">Atwill and Pereira, 2003<\/a>; <a href=\"#ref\">Atwill et al., 1998<\/a>), whereas others have reported an increase in shedding (<a href=\"#ref\">Faubert and Litvinsky, 2000<\/a>). Infections in farm cats (<a href=\"#ref\">Nash et al., 1993<\/a>), and dogs are also asymptomatic, but these animals may also act as a reservoir.<\/p>\n<p>As Cryptosporidium lacks host specificity among mammals, humans can also become infected. The recent increase in popularity of farm parks for recreational visits has led to a number of outbreaks, particularly where the opportunity exists for members of the public to feed or have direct contact with young animals (<a href=\"#ref\">Evans and Gardner, 1996<\/a>;<a href=\"#ref\"> Miron et al., 1991<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2>Clinical signs of Cryptosporidium Infection<\/h2>\n<p><a id=\"control_prevention\"><\/a>Clinical symptoms occur 3-7 days after infection and include a profuse watery diarrhea, inappetance, gastrointestinal discomfort, abdominal tension, nausea and a mild fever. The onset of clinical signs coincides with the shedding of oocysts in the dung. Severe infections may lead to dehydration. Calves, while becoming depressed and experiencing severe diarrhea, often continue to feed quite well during infection. Mortality rates are usually low. Any animals scouring need to be kept in isolation until the scouring stops.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span>As infections are initiated by ingestion of oocysts, control strategies must be aimed at reducing the number of oocysts in the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Any bought-in animals should be quarantined for at least 7 days to see if scouring occurs. Any scouring animals should be kept in isolation, which should continue for at least one week after the diarrhea has ceased.<\/p>\n<p>Cows about to give birth should be cleaned of fecal contamination, and their teats should be clean. Ensure all new-born calves receive sufficient <span class=\"tooltips\"><a href=\"#\" rel=\"tooltip\" title=\"Form of milk produced in late pregnancy containing antibodies to protect newborn against disease\">colostrum<\/a><\/span>. Known infected calves should be handled after handling the healthy stock.<\/p>\n<p>Where possible, an &#8216;all in all out&#8217; house policy should be employed, so that pens and equipment can be steam cleaned or treated with an appropriate disinfectant (<a href=\"#ref\">Garber et al., 1994<\/a>). The pens should be liberally bedded with straw.<\/p>\n<p>The housing area should be cleaned and disinfected annually following turnout to grass. Since temperatures above 60\u00b0 C inactivate oocysts, steam cleaning can be an effective way of sterilizing the building, pens and feeding troughs.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"treatment\"><\/a>In farms where cryptosporidiosis is known to be a problem, halofuginone lactate (Halocur, MSD Animal Health) can be used as a preventive measure. This is not a treatment, but acts to reduce the excretion of oocysts from infected calves and can reduce the clinical severity of infection (<a href=\"#ref\">Jarvie et al., 2005<\/a>; <a href=\"#ref\">Joachim et al., 2003<\/a>; <a href=\"#ref\">Lefay et al., 2001<\/a>). Dosing is by oral administration after feed and must be continued for 7 consecutive days. This can be undertaken either as a prophylactic preventive measure on infected farms to reduce oocyst excretion, where all calves are treated starting at 24-48 hours old. Alternatively, it can be used in the face of an outbreak to reduce the excretion of oocysts and the severity of clinical disease, where calves are treated within 24 hours of the onset of diarrhea.<\/p>\n<div class=\"hr hr3\" style='margin:30px 0 10px 0 !important;'><\/div>\n<h4>Treating Cryptosporidium Infection<\/h4>\n<p>In otherwise healthy calves, the diarrhea will usually resolve without intervention after 4-7 days. No licensed effective chemotherapeutic agents or vaccines are available to treat Cryptosporidium infections, but halofuginone has been shown to reduce the severity of diarrhea and limits the spread. Supportive therapy may be in the form of oral rehydration with a proprietary electrolyte solution (<a href=\"#ref\">Garthwaite et al., 1994<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"good_practice\"><\/a>The affected animals should be housed and infected neonates protected from chilling. The infected calves may require considerable encouragement to drink for several days.
