What is farm animal welfare?<\/h4>\n

A framework for the achievement of high standards of animal welfare is provided by the UK\u2019s Animal Welfare Act 2006 legislation, which in turn is based on the \u2018five freedoms\u2019 of the Farm Animal Welfare Council (FAWC). The Act says that an animal\u2019s welfare needs include:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  • a suitable environment (how it is housed)<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • a suitable diet (what it eats and drinks)<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • the ability to exhibit normal behavior patterns<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • any need it has to be housed with, or apart from, other animals<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • protection from pain, suffering, injury and disease<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    In 2012, the World Organisation for Animal Health adopted 10 \u2018General Principles for the Welfare of Animals in Livestock Production Systems\u2019 to guide the development of animal welfare standards. The General Principles draw on half a century of scientific research relevant to animal welfare:<\/p>\n

    \"environment<\/a><\/td>\nHow the environment influences injuries and the transmission of diseases and parasites<\/td>\n\"infection<\/a><\/td>\nPrevention and control of diseases and parasites, with humane euthanasia if treatment is not feasible or recovery is unlikely<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
    \"lying<\/a><\/td>\nHow the environment affects resting, movement and the performance of natural behavior<\/td>\n\"preventative<\/a><\/td>\nPrevention & management of pain<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
