The source of infection\u00a0is assumed to be from oocysts shed by sows in feces.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><\/span>Coccidiosis is a common cause of piglet diarrhea, accounting for up to 27% cases of diarrhea between 7 days of age and weaning (<a href=\"#ref\">Cowart and Casteel, 2001<\/a>), causing scour in piglets before weaning and sometimes immediately post-weaning <a href=\"#ref\">(Straw <em>et al<\/em>., 2013<\/a>). Infection can occur in all types of farrowing facilities and under all types of management systems (<a href=\"#ref\">Taylor <em>et al<\/em>., 2007<\/a>)<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"hr hr3\" style='margin:20px 0px 20px 0px !important;'><\/div>\n<h3>Causes of Coccidiosis in Pigs<\/h3>\n<p>The most common cause\u00a0of coccidiosis is <em>Isospora suis<\/em> which belongs to the <em>Eimeriidae<\/em> family of <span class=\"tooltips\"><a href=\"#\" rel=\"tooltip\" title=\"Single cell micro-organisms\">protozoa<\/a><\/span> <a href=\"#ref\">(Straw <em>et al<\/em><\/a><a href=\"#ref\">, 2013<\/a>; <a href=\"#ref\">Potter, 1998<\/a>). It is found mainly in pre-weaning piglets, and spread by piglet-to-piglet contact (<a href=\"#ref\">Cowart, 1995<\/a>). Incidence of the disease in the UK is not known, but <em>I. suis<\/em> is present in herds countrywide (<a href=\"#ref\">Roberts and Walker, 1981<\/a>; <a href=\"#ref\">Taylor, 1995<\/a>). <em>Eimeria debliecki<\/em>, <em>Eimeria polita<\/em>, <em>Eimeria scabra<\/em> and <em>Eimeria Spinosa<\/em> have all been described in causing clinical disease in pigs (<a href=\"#ref\">Taylor <em>et al<\/em>., 2007<\/a>). Several <em>Eimera<\/em> spp species have been identified to cause disease in different hosts (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmhealthonline.com\/disease-management\/cattle-diseases\/coccidiosis-in-cattle\/\">Cattle<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmhealthonline.com\/disease-management\/sheep-diseases\/coccidiosis-in-lambs\/\">lambs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmhealthonline.com\/disease-management\/poultry-diseases\/coccidiosis-in-poultry\/\">poultry<\/a>), however they are host-specific, <em>i.e<\/em>., they only infect one species.<\/p>\n<h3>Clinical Signs of Coccidiosis in Pigs<\/h3>\n<p>Coccidial infection most commonly results in yellow or creamy-grey diarrhea, causing loss of condition and reduced growth rates in piglets 7-10 days of age. Severely affected piglets produce a rough haired coat, become dehydrated and remain continually dirtied with feces (<a href=\"#ref\">Straw <em>et al<\/em>., 2013<\/a>). Failure to respond to standard antimicrobial <span class=\"tooltips\"><a href=\"#\" rel=\"tooltip\" title=\"Neonatal diarrhea\">scours<\/a><\/span> therapy may indicate coccidial infection. Mortality rates may reach 20% (<a href=\"#ref\">Taylor, 1995<\/a>). Concurrent infections with other bacteria, viruses or parasites can increase mortality further.<\/p>\n<p><em>I. suis<\/em> can cause infections on its own or in combinations with other <span class=\"tooltips\"><a href=\"#\" rel=\"tooltip\" title=\"A pathogen that causes diseases in the gut\">enteropathogens<\/a><\/span>. Disinfection can be used although available disinfectants are not particularly effective in combating <em>I. suis<\/em>, emphasizing the need for physical cleaning and burning of bedding (<a href=\"#ref\">Stuart <em>et al<\/em>., 1981<\/a>). Your veterinarian can provide advice on agents to combat the oocysts.<\/p>\n<p>In outdoor units, the problem is more pronounced in the summer, and may be aggravated by wallowing, where sows&#8217; udders become contaminated with coccidial oocysts (<a href=\"#ref\">Potter, 1998<\/a>). Rodents also represent a potential means of spreading infection, and should be controlled (<a href=\"#ref\">Straw <em>et al<\/em>.,\u00a02013<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Increased risk is associated with cross fostering piglets within 24 hours of birth (<a href=\"#ref\">Skampardonis <em>et al<\/em>., 2012<\/a>).<\/p>\n<div class=\"hr hr3\" style='margin:20px 0px 20px 0px !important;'><\/div>\n<h4>Treating Coccidiosis in Pigs<\/h4>\n<p>Coccidial infection does not respond to antimicrobials (<a href=\"#ref\">Roberts and Walker, 1981<\/a>; <a href=\"#ref\">Taylor, 1995<\/a>) or treatment via sows as they are not a major source of infection (<a href=\"#ref\">Straw <em>et al<\/em>.,\u00a02013<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Toltrazuril is regularly used in herds to individually treat affected piglets by mouth at 3-5 days of age. Affected litters also respond well to water by mouth and should be given access to drinking facilities \u2013 for example by placing a cube drinker in the fender of the farrowing hut.<\/p>\n<p>Any drug therapy should be supported with provision of dry bedding and reduction of stress from inclement weather, overcrowding or unhygienic conditions.
